Our Story
Hi there,
If you've found your way here, it's likely you have an incredible brown princess (or two, or three!) in your life. And I'm sure, like me, your journey is filled with moments that make you pause and wonder how well we are projecting self-love to our little ones.
Let me share a story with you.
Most of us know the book 'Little Leaders'. It was gifted to my daughter when she was three by an incredible aunt. We eagerly dove into its pages every night—what better inspiration for a young girl than stories of women who achieved great things?
Each day, I'd ask her to select who she wanted to read about. After a week, I noticed a pattern that hit me deep in my soul: she only ever picked the white, fair-skinned ladies.
When I finally mustered the courage to ask her why she hadn't chosen any brown ladies, her answer stopped me in my tracks: 'Brown isn't a nice colour, Mummy.'
Well, I accepted the challenge. My daughter and I embarked on a new journey, seeking out the stories of the most formidable brown women to walk our continent. Women who not only shared our color but our values, our heritage, and our culture.
As we learned, I had a realization. Even though she was so young and living in a predominantly Black country, my daughter—a true "girly girl" whose favorite thing is dress-up—was consistently being exposed to foreign culture. I looked at her play closet and saw countless costumes of princesses who looked nothing like her.
This led me to create what I feel is long overdue: 'Royal Me'.
Inspired by the true stories of African Queens, our costumes are more than just playthings. They are invitations to a world where our children can see themselves as the heroes. They tell a story of just how beautiful, brave, powerful, and intelligent our brown is.
This is more than a brand; it's a love letter to our children. It's the conversation I needed to have, woven into a gown, a shield, a crown.
Thank you for being here and joining us on this journey.
With so much love,
Tope, Adagu & The Royal Me Family
